Rooflights – glass

Natural daylight in a room can make all the difference to the decoration of the property and the health of its occupants. Rooflights are the best way of introducing natural light into your room and can provide up to three times more daylight than an equally sized vertical window.

In our previous and future blogs we will be providing you with information on the various types of rooflights/skylights etc and options available to suit the requirements of the property and the room.

When choosing a rooflight, you will be presented with two main options: glass or polycarbonate (we provided information on Polycarbonate rooflights in our previous blog). Many of our clients wonder which option is most suited for their needs and require further information on the difference between the two materials.

The glass used to manufacture rooflights is strong and versatile. Many of the modern, low profile rooflights available are made of glass, allowing you to achieve a premium aesthetic.

  • Glass is crystal clear and will provide plenty of bright and beautiful natural light
  • Make sure you choose glass that is thermally efficient to further minimise the risk of condensation. Sealed double or triple glazed units should be installed by a reputable contractor to ensure the rooflight is kept free from damp.
  • Choose glass with low-E coatings and argon filled cavities if you want to achieve the lowest U-values possible which doesn’t allow heat to escape through the unit.
  • Reduce noise; glass tends to provide better noise reduction that polycarbonate options. You could also install secondary glazing with an air gap to further eliminate noise pollution.
  • There are various types of glass available, like coloured, toughened or self-cleaning. Further information regarding self-cleaning glass is provided in another of our blogs.
